How much sleep for nearly 7 year old

My ds just doesn't seem able to switch off and go to sleep. We do the normal bath, story, bed thing, but he gets up and draws pictures, reads books, etc. with the odd trip downstairs to ask us a question. This can go on until 9.30, but he normally settles down about 9pm.
Is this normal? I worry he's not getting enough sleep. He wakes about 7.30am.

Sounds a bit like my DD1, who was 7 in Jan. Over the last couple of weeks she has been saying that she is not tired at bedtime and can't get to sleep. She shares a room with her 4 year old brother and at the moment we put them both to bed around 7.45pm but I tell DD1 I am happy for her to read in bed until 8.30pm using her reading light (she is a real bookworm so will happily trawl through her books for 45 min (she also has a sneaky supply of pencils and notepads in her bed and sometimes she will doodle away or write stories). At least this way, her brother can go off to sleep easily and she can stay awake for a bit if she's not tired.

The last couple of nights I have gone up to check on them around 8.45pm and she is still awake telling me she can't get to sleep but I tell her that she really has to lie down and try as it is getting late. She generally wakes up 6.45ish, although a few times recently we have gone in to wake her up at 7.15am.

I googled kids sleep requirements the other day and it said that for 5-10 year olds, they need 10-12 hours a night. I know this is very general for a large age range, but I figured if she is sleeping 8.30/9pm till 7ish then that is 10 - 10.5 hours so seems reasonable. Also she is not generally tired and grumpy during the day so I can only assume that she gets enough sleep. Is your ds tired/grumpy after school? Of have the teachers mentioned he is tired in class? If not, I would assume he is getting enough sleep (esp if he doesnt wake until 7.30am).

my 8 year old sleeps 7 til 7 but only a few others in his class do this too. most have much more energy and go to bed at 8 or 9.
