In the last couple of days my dd (5mo) has started to do a "fake" cough, she only does it when she's excited or frustrated. It's not a real cough because it sounds completely different, only lasts for two coughs, isn't an effort and the doctor has given her a clean bill of health. He thinks it's attention related.

I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

Just realised I've somehow cut off half the title, it's meant to say do a fake cough. Sorry, should have previewed first!

Ha ha yes my DD does it too, she is 4 months, usually when she is excited. It's so cute.

Oh yes my DD used to spend her time doing sharp intakes of breath, scared the life out of me at first, but then worked out it was just when i stopped playing with her for more than a couple of minutes :), the fake cough came later when she realised coughing got a reaction,

they are funny little things, she's 18 months now and amuses herself in the pushchair by going ah, ah, ah, ahchoo over and over again

don't let it worry you, Shes just worked out her own little way or getting your attention :)

You're right about the getting attention. The first few times she did it i had stopped playing with her for a couple of minutes and came running back as soon as she "coughed". (just to point out before i get accused of abandoning her, i had popped to the loo and she was safely in her playpen).

my 11mo still does his fake cough which he's been doing since about 4 or 5 mo. He does it in supermarkets when strangers who he is smiling at don't acknowledge him!!

estya · 06/05/2011 22:53

Mine did this too.
I asked the health visitor and she said that it is often just another noise that LO discovers they can make - and when she notices that is earns concerned fussing, it becomes her favorite noise.

AngelDog · 07/05/2011 00:04

She's just discovered she can do it - so she does. Lots of fun!

My 16 m.o. DS still loves doing fake coughs - if one of us even says the word 'cough' he's off. Mind you, my DH eggs him on. Grin

Yes, we've started calling our DD Eloise Poshcough because she does a little posh cough when she wants our attention.

Actually, I think she's moved on to blowing raspberries now but for a while the fake cough was her favourite thing to do.

Hmmm ds is only 8 weeks old and has been doing this for a few days. It usually precedes him crying or when he wants attention. Can not wait to see what else he comes out with.

BeeMyBaby · 08/05/2011 18:29

Yes, she did it from about 6-11months. I found it very cute as she would stick her tongue really far out and pretend to cough.

FunnyBumbleBee · 08/05/2011 19:51

Yes, my 5 month old does this too. She also does a lovely line in fake laughs!
