How usual is it for a baby NOT to suck its thumb?

DS sucked fingers/ hands constantly when he was newborn but then stopped. He doesn't have a dummy and is now 6 months old. Does this mean he won't ever be a thumb sucker? Or might he start doing it soon? He now has good control over his hands and digits so could do it if he wanted to i suppose.

Any other experiences of thumb sucking at 6 months or later, or not thumb sucking at all? I have no feel for how common it is....

dunno.
I never sucked my thumb.
my little sister sucked hers till she about 2, i think, maybe younger.
my big sister still sucks hers.

One of the DCs never sucked a thumb or fingers - 2nd started because a "friend" gave him his thumb when he started to grizzle - they were holding him whilst I went to the loo! In those 3 minutes he became a thumb sucker - aged about 10 weeks - and carried on until at least 11 years!!!

my ds sucked his thumb at birth but stopped quite early on, at 10 months he hasnt sone it since unless they are covered in food Grin

Knofje · 04/05/2011 15:01

very usual AFAIK, neither of my DC did. I didn't, DP didn't. I don't know many babies who do (habitually).

MightyAphrodite · 04/05/2011 15:05

None of my 4 DC ever showed interest in their thumbs or fingers, but 1, 2 and 3 had dummies (my choice, not theirs!) DC4 flatly refused the dummy and neither she nor DC1 or 3 would be bottle fed - they didn't like the teat. On the other hand, I sucked my thumb until I was about 10. Clearly it's not genetic Grin

DS never sucked his thumb as a baby, and wasn't interested in a dummy either.

He's now 2.5, and has recently started sucking two fingers. Not sure why!

mousymouse · 04/05/2011 15:11

both mine never did. not even when teething. no dummy either.

TryLikingClarity · 04/05/2011 15:37

OP - do you want your DC to suck his thumb? Not all babies have to do that, you know.

My DS is almost 15 months old, never had a dummy and didn't suck his thumb.

He did go through a stage of putting things in his mouth - like toys and things which weren't edible - but these where for experimenting, not for comfort.

DrMuffy · 04/05/2011 15:43

Only one of mine (out of 4) was a thumb-sucker. He started at birth and gave it up when he started crawling - around 10 months or so. The other three never sucked their thumbs or had dummies.

pookamoo · 04/05/2011 15:50

Today, DD (2.5) sucked her thumb for the first time at nap time Hmm

She's never done it before, so I assumed she never would.

Maybe there was something tasty on there! Grin

My sister sucked hers until she was about 9, but my brother and I never did.

LostInTransmogrification · 04/05/2011 16:05

Our group of friends (10 babies) has one thumb sucker, about 4 with dummies and the rest don't use anything!

matana · 04/05/2011 16:43

TryLikingClarity - i don't know, i suppose it's cute and just assumed he'd suck his thumb at some point! I also wonder whether it would help him get back to sleep when he wakes at night. At the moment he cuddles a comforter, so if he wakes and can't find it we have to place it in his hand.

DD is 15 months now, didn't have a dummy and doesn't thumb suck, my niece who is 13months didn't have a dummy and doesn't suck her thumb... not sure if either will start later?

Out of my siblings, none of whom had dummies, only my sister sucked her two fingers and promptly stopped at about 2 or 3yo when her tips got chopped off (old stylee dummy fairy).

Firawla · 04/05/2011 18:43

neither of mine has, one of them does have a dummy but the other one only had for a couple of months (age like 1-3 months then he stopped using as he wasnt too attached)
i dont think its that common for all babies to suck their thumbs

gkys · 04/05/2011 18:48

ds1 thumb sucker ditto ds3, ds 2 didn't
