crawling but not sitting - should I be doing something different?

dt2 has been crawling (commando style) since about 6mo, and dt1 copied him about 2 weeks later. people say it's early and I joke it's because they're twins and have spend a lot of tummy time on their own while I sort out the other one/make dinner etc. but neither can sit reliably unaided yet (7mo). dt2 can for up to 10 seconds, dt1 really no longer than 2 seconds. I presume this is also because they don't get a lot of chances to practice sitting. sounds like I'm a terrible mother, but really it is just easier to play with them together on their tummies than try and hold them both.

does it matter that they're not sitting yet? should I be making more effort to help them?

mine both started trying to crawl before they could sit (both commando crawling at about 7 months and not sitting reliably until 8). neither of them liked being propped up - they preferred tummy. i'd just let them get on with it i think. are they rolling?

No - I wouldn't say it's late to be sitting completely on their own yet - 8 months+ really.

yes, they roll, they drag themselves across floors, can't keep still! if you stand them up and hold hands they will try and walk and dt2 can stand in a cot and work his way round the edge holding on. just the sitting thing.

I'm not worried about their abilities, just concerned that if I don't help them practice sitting they'll miss out on some vital developmental stage. good to hear your dcs took the same path little, and that 8+ months is within normal vintage. thanks :)

dd2 and ds both crawled at 6 months and didn't sit for a few months later. Basically because if you put them sitting they threw themselves on their tummies and crawled off so they didn't get practice. dd1 sat beautifully on the day before she was 6 months, but didn't crawl until 9 months. She had lots of time to perfect her sitting first.
