11 month old cries when travelling in car

Our 11 month old son used to be ok in his car seat when he was little but since he's started to be able to move independently, he screams his head off when travelling in the car.

Since it's rarely me driving, I can usually get around this by bfing him in the seat til he falls asleep. However, this isn't so practical for longer journeys (more than 2 hours or so), nor when I have to drive.

We don't have a car so it's only occasionally that we travel this way. We're going on holiday in a couple of weeks and will rent a car (I'm driving) so we really need help with this!

Does he have a toy to play with like those little steering wheel thingeys to keep him amused (suppose it depends if he's still rearward facing?) Maybe cos you don't have a car and he's not used to it its just very strange for him. Worst case scenario is he'll just have to cry and hopefully eventually fall asleep :-(
