Hi there,

Do you think DS could be beginning to teethe? In the last day or so he has been really drooly, and chewing on his hands (not hungry), hard to settle and he's had 1 nappy that was v loose (almost diarrhoea). I've noticed his gums looking hard and kind of white underneath. Apparently I had teeth quite early too. Anyone had any experience of teething signs at this age, or am I maybe putting 2 & 2 together to make 5!! Also, if it could be teething, any tried and tested things we can try for young babies?

Thanks so much!

Hi, it could be teething but that doesn't mean that teeth are going to appear anytime soon :-)) my son has had same signs on and off from 5 months, drooling, chewing, white lumps under gums, loose stools, spotty botty, have been using nelsons homeopathic teething granules (empty sachet into babies mouth and it dissolves on tongue), teething gel (i like dentinox best its not as runny as bonjela) and if he is really grumbling with them the odd spoon of calpol but I don't give that very often. Having said all that, he is now 10 months and no teeth yet! But babies can be born with teeth so your boy could get them early especially if it runs in family. Can't hurt to try the powders and gel anyway see if it sooths him a bit :-)

Hi,
We thought DS was teething at about this age.. but then it went on, and on, and on........ I think there are various stages to it- also, the chances are that if he has more symptoms at this age like bad nappies etc that he has a bug, so watch out for that.

we had the same signs at about 7-8 weeks and DS didn't get his first tooth till 7 months.

We had exactly the same from 7 weeks. Drooling, chewing hands, a constant low-level moaning. DS also kept grabbing/hitting at his jaw, too. Now DS is 10 weeks and it's settling again - hope yours will too!

As DS was clearly in pain, we gave him infant calpol with the blessing of the HV, which made a huge difference, enabled him to get to sleep in the evening for example.

Thanks everyone for your help & advice - I'm seeing the HV on Thursday so will get her opinion too. Hopefully things will settle down for him poor poor boy!
