2 year old smacking me in the mouth

My just turned 2 year old keeps constanly smacking at me in the face if he can not do what he wants to do. He also has started smacking at other people if he is in a temper, and also makes the punching noises to go with it. It seems to have become worse since he has graduated from the baby section at nursery to the over 2s part downstairs, although they say he never smacks at nursery. He is only at nursery 2 afternoons a week.

I have tried raising my voice, saying no and holding hands down. Naughty spot works at home but is useless when we are out. His temper and tantrums are really bad, and he will scream for up to an hour before he calms down and relises he has not won. He is so headstrong, confident and thinks at times he is the boss.

Any suggestions and advice would be really appreciated.

Thankyou for your advice. We have now introduced the naughty cot in the lounge i.e. Travel cot. Every time he smacks i give him one warning and if he does it again he goes into the naughty cot. So far it seems to be working well, he now raises his arm about to smack and when i mention naughty cot he lowers his arm and you can see him thinking about what he is doing.

Outside is still a problem. I will take your advice of just taking him away from the situation and out of peoples way when he throws his tantrums.
