Did anyone else's baby creep across the floor like a caterpillar instead of crawlig?

DD is doing this - she pulls with her hands and pushes with her legs and kind of creeps along like a caterpillar. It doesn't look very energy efficient Grin

Just wondered if other's babies did this and if/how long it took for them to go onto proper crawling.

Oh DD did this before crawling - I can't remember how long it went on for though - maybe a month? Bad mammy that I am, it always made me laugh to see her grunting with the effort of inching across the floor.

Yes, in fact when my grandad died my mum found an entry in his diary from 1972 reading "suzi started creeping today" (we were living with them at the time), so it must be a recognised stage (or was back then!)

Ooh, interesting, thanks

Yes my 10 month old is doing it now but I didn't call it caterpillar I said to hubby he looks like a zombie with no legs dragging himself across the floor lol I think caterpillar is nicer though!

DD did that for about 3 weeks before she started crawling properly. We have laminate floors so she was surprising fast!

SandStorm · 20/04/2011 18:24

My first child never crawled at all. She rolled everywhere she wanted to go and then on her first birthday she just got up and walked.

CointreauVersial · 20/04/2011 18:26

DD1 did a "one-knee-one-foot" crawl - very peculiar, and she always had one knee of her trousers pristine and the other one worn and grubby.

My friend had a "commando" crawler, and he was bloody fast at it!

bubblebabeuk · 20/04/2011 19:46

My 10 month old does the caterpiller crawl, has been for about a month, no signs of proper crawling or pulling himself up though :) My dd1 rolled everywhere then walked at 11 months, finally learnt to crawl at 17 months copying her cousin. DD2 was a bottom shuffler from 11 months and walked within a week of that. DS1 (mentioned above) caterpiller crawl since 9 months.

atmywitssend · 20/04/2011 19:48

Yes, we used to call DS "slug boy" for a while as he did just that. Yhe all of a sudden he started to crawl.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 20/04/2011 19:51

My DD did it as well. Even when she could crawl she sometimes did it to get into small spaces!

CappuccinoCarrie · 20/04/2011 20:00

My DD did it for a few weeks before properly crawling. We had laminate floor too, so reaching out with hands and sliding body along (with the occasional use of foot for extra friction) was mighty effective.

My LO (6.5months) has started doing what I like to call "The Slug" across the room - this sounds very similar! Grin

My cousing did "The Slug" too - and he never crawled, just went straight to walking.
