How quickly do your children grow?

This is probably a very silly question but I have had a shock this week to find that both ds1 (4) and ds2 (21 months) still fit into last year's summer clothes (ds1's were 3-4 and ds2 is now wearing everything from 9-12 months to 18-24 months!)

It just seems a little odd, though I suppose that some of it was quite loose last year and is now less so, though I don't put them in stuff that is hanging off them so really they seem to have grown very little over the last year. Hmm.

Another shock was taking ds1 to get new shoes and being told he doesn't need them - he's been wearing his since September (they were properly fitted)- well why does everyone go on about the cost of children's shoes yet mine last 9+ months?

I just wondered how quickly other people's dc outgrow their clothes as mine seem to have ground to a halt!

Summer clothes for a girl can definitely last 2 years, 1 year as maxi-length and 1 as minis! I remember you could always tell how long a girl had been in the Brownies by the length of her uniform (and colour!). DD (4 1/2) still fits in last years sandals so will wear those. Shoes can be a bit different as toes can get squashed whereas they have that extra space in sandals.

The only time i know ds has grown is when he is starving all the time, i cant fill him and then.....his little troooz are way up his ankles and his little tops are up his wrists!!!

School shoes usually last the year, or until they actually drop off his feet and are wrecked.

Its always quite sudden rather than gradual. He is still in aged 5-6 and is 7 nearly 8 but he is a wee little fella

DS is 17 months and is still wearing mainly 9-12 (just starting to move to 12-18 tops which drown him but some 9-12 are to short) 9-12 trousers are still miles to big though!

He is still wearing 6-9 shorts though as the 9-12 ones are way to long and fall down!

Feet grow a size every year or so but she grows out of clothes at an alarming rate...she's 6 and 124cm. She grows about a centimetre every 2 months or so. It costs me a fortune!

cece · 19/04/2011 22:05

When DD was little she wore a pair of trousers for 3 or 4 summers. First year as full length trousers. 2nd year as capri length (this is what they were supposed to be). 3rd summer they were long shorts and I think the final year she wore them as shorter shorts! LOL

NorthernGobshite · 19/04/2011 22:06

cece dd has a dress she wore when she was 2 that it now a lovely top with leggings!

Stinkyfeet · 19/04/2011 22:12

Both ds's grow really slowly! I can always get at least 2 seasons out of all their clothes. DS1 (just 8) has worn a pair of shorts this week that are now in their 4th summer of wear. He is one of the smallest in his class - I've been predicting an imminent growth spurt for the last 2 years ........ still waiting Grin

Wallace · 19/04/2011 22:21

My almost 10 year old dd STILL has size 12 feet. 4 year old ds2 is now an 11!

drivingmisscrazy · 19/04/2011 22:21

no, DD also grows v. slowly and still wearing last summer's clothes (she's 2.3); she's gone up all of one shoe size in just under a year (a spectacular 4.5 now!). She is little for her age, which means people look at her a bit strangely when she comes out with long, perfectly formed sentences!

lljkk · 20/04/2011 19:04

DC don't grow. Well, hardly. DD is 9.5yo & has a shirt that says for age 3-4, she has dresses she's been wearing for 3 summers & they still don't seem to short. She isn't the smallest in her year, either. She was just outgrowing size 12-18m trousers on her 3rd birthday. Similar for 2 of my DSs. I expect shoes to last 9-12 months before being outgrown.

SummerRain · 20/04/2011 19:07

dd has tops and skirts thats she's been wearing for 3-4 years now and her shoe size barly goes up pnce a year. ds1 has overtaken her in shoe size now and he's 18 months younger.

ds2 is also wearing clothes that he's been wearing since he was a baby, he's 2 now.

dd is long and lanky so she is growing, just not outwards. And ds2 is a dinky wee soul who was standing next to a 16 month old today and barely had an inch over her!

Tgger · 20/04/2011 20:25

Awwww, yes well they have spurts and do slow down.

I have a huge 4.5 year old- looked at him in his 4-5 swim suit (all in one) today and thought (owwww-!) - he's outgrown it and it's tight in the nether regions- altho he said it was ok!! (think he didn't want a reason not to go in the paddling pool). However, despite being huge he too hasn't changed shoe size for yonks- really slowed down since those early days.

DD would probably have fitted into last year's summer clothes, but I gave them away! (have loads of hand me downs anyway of next size). She's 2.5 but quite dinky, very different from her brother. They look funny together, he looks a year older than his age and she looks almost a year younger (oh and has hardly any hair either). Her shoes are 5.5 and quite big still!

Booandpops · 20/04/2011 23:03

My dd is a tall five yo but wears her 3-4 in some items. Especially dresses that turn into tops with leggings. She is very slim so doesn't grow out only up! My son gets a yr out of his clothes except shorts they last 3 years! He is stockier and tall for his age. Shoes last 9-12 mths. And sandals longer. :)

NorthernGobshite · 21/04/2011 10:25

Have just measured dd (6) and she's grown 2 cm in 6 weeks!!!!!!

Chundle · 21/04/2011 10:30

My dd is nearly 7 she used to be one of the tallest girls when she was in reception now in year 2 the smaller girls are overtaking her and she is one of the shortest!

EllenJane1 · 21/04/2011 12:01

Baby clothes from one year often fit the next as they get a bit taller, but can actually get quite a bit slimmer around their waists. Perfectly normal.

My DS 1 grew 3 cm in 3 weeks then not again for 6 months! School shoes nearly always last the whole year (by size if not condition). My DS2's feet have only grown by 1 size in two years.
