Maybe try playing doctor and patient role play with him as the doctor, might give you some insight into what he's scared of.

DS1 is also 5 and has grown out of the Dr fear but used to be dreadful in hosp[ital a consultant refused to examine him he got so distresseed :(
I found just explaining to him over and over before what would happen and talking to him while with the Dr helped.

we have appointment tomorrow and im dreadin it.been reminding him and talkin about it,he acts ok with it but i just know hes gonna go mad.
Its not as if i can tell him off for behaving this way because i know he cant help it,its like hes pocessed, god knows wat doctors think.im hopin he will grow out of it too

Good luck with the appointment today. I used to sit him in my lap, pin his arms and then hold him in whatever position the Dr wanted. Had to do it again recently after a bad hopital experience.

it was a disaster,i have a thick lip from him hittin me.dr has perscribed some seditive for another appointment,dr thinks he has hernia and will need a scan, its goin to be impossible!

Oh, bugger
It's difficult when they get bigger too. DS1 was in hospital earlier this year and kicked me in the face while trying to get meds into him - he's usually loads better but one of the nurses upset him :(
