Lopsided crawling - is this a hip problem?

DS is now 15 months and has been crawling since about 8 months. He's just starting to take a couple of first steps too Grin

His crawl has always been lopsided. He doesn't drag one leg, but instead uses his left knee and his right foot. He's always done that and I haven't been worried because I thought it was common.

He can kick really well with both legs and gave me a good kick in the stomach this morning whilst changing his nappy.

However, now DP has a bee in his bonnet because the nanny said that DS only kicks with one leg whilst swimming and that it might be a hip problem.

I honestly don't think there is anything wrong with his hips - it was checked at birth and then at the 6 week check by the doctor and they found nothing wrong. He kicks evenly.

Is this all normal, are we worrying over nothing?

I'm not sure about the hip thing, but my ds also crawled like your son Grin and he's a healthy 8 yr old with no hip problems

I don't think this is anything to worry about.

Plenty of children crawl like that, I think it's just one of the easiest ways for them to start moving.

As for the swimming, if it's while he's swimming breast stroke, it sounds like it's something called 'screw kick', which is basically where the legs just don't kick/draw symetrically. This is very common, and nothing to worry about at all - I used to do that when I was a child.

DS also crawled like this and I was worried as I had a hip problem when I was born. We took him for an x-ray/ultra sound and he was fine.

I would get it checked out,as a mother of a son who found out her son had hip dysplasia.

Sorry, forgot to add - he was 12 months when diagognosed.
