There was a string on this a couple of weeks ago with a 19 month old, I watched with interest as my 18 month old had also recently started doing this. But the advice was just to ignore it and try not to feed into it by showing too much concern.
I sympathise, my ds actually walks around looking for the hardest object to bang his head against if he's tantruming. We had a phone call an hour and a half into his first day at nursery because he'd head butted a shelf in anger. I'm hoping its just a phase.

My DS1 headbanged from 18mo till about 3 yo. He got down on hands and knees and would head butt the floor / concrete car park / Sainsbury's flooring repeatedly. Gave himself many a bruise and bumpy head. We just ignored it all - well, made him safe first. Eventually he would move to carpeted areas before he started.

It is just a phase, distressing the first few times but you get used to it. And they don't do lasting damage.

A friend had a DS who would look for the hardest, sharpest, most dangerous thing to head bang on but he never did himself any harm either.
