21 month old bit off her dummy

My 21 month old daughter bit off her dummy. I'm terrified that she could do it again and choke on it. I've been wanting to wean her off it anyway, so this might be the time. I just want to know if this has happened to anyone else? The dummy is for a smaller child, so maybe it was inappropriate. Do they make them thicker for older children so that this shouldn't happen?

How old was the dummy? I know that latex ones carry a warning that they should only be used for a certain length of time (think it's 3 months but not totally sure) because after that the rubber starts to deteriorate.

I'm a bit ashamed to say how old. Certainly more than 3 months. It's silicone though. I wonder if it has the same warning. Maybe I should start reading the small print!
Thanks for your feedback.

Funny you should say that... when I was little I had a dummy until I started biting through them (about the age of 2). My mum said, she gave me a warning not to bite through them, and that the next one i bit through would be the last! I took it quite well apparently and understood the rule!

Needless to say, I didn't have a dummy for much longer!

I got DS off his dummy when he started doing this. I had about 6 in the house and as he bit holes in them I got him to throw them in the bin until it got to the last one and we then 'discussed' how it was the last one, it was rubbish/no good anymore so we may as well throw that one away too and not have one anymore. He was perfectly happy with it on the whold - just occassional whimpering for it for a few weeks - when he was upset over something or feeling ill etc.

Great opportuntiy IMO
