Whiney, grumpy negativity in 4yo DD - will this end?!

My DD, who just turned 4, is lovely and exuberant at times, but she is also really whiney and negative. At least 3 or 4 times a day she'll have a strop about something. She just came back from a friend's b/d party and said with a mardy face that it was no fun. Then I showed her the dress I'd bought her and she said she didn't like it. Will this kind of stuff change? Is it normal for a 4-year-old, or does she (I hope not) just have a negative personality? Is there anything I can do to make it better, except trying to be cheerful myself?

My just 5yo DD is much the same. Today she has whined about EVERYTHING!
There is always something wrong. Something hurts. She can't do something. She doesn't like something blah blah blah. It is hard work with her at times but i think they will come through it. Just a phase or something. A very tiring phase Grin

Thanks 25, let's hope it is just a phase. Today we had a slightly better day - I think because I took her out all morning and let her watch a film on TV in the afternoon. Makes me sad that we can't just have a nice time together at home, though.

I usually work out what is causing grumpiness/negativity in my 4.5yr old - usually an illness appears within a couple of days or she sleeps it off. She also is dreadful about 'just being' at home and needs stimulation ALL the time. It is better in the warmer weather as i just fling her out in the garden so i can't hear the whingeing Grin

we have a whiny 4.5 year old DD. we tell her to go back upstairs and turn her whingey button off and then come downstairs.
She is child 3 and yes they do get over it, but god she is worse than her sisters ever were. Sometimes it is just tiredness
