Curious about "grounding"

Does this work? How is it done? I have two children, they've both flown the nest now. I'm just curious, having seen it referred to in various threads.

I did have the standard battles with them as teenagers - and some battles that possibly weren't so standard - but we muddled along ok on the whole. They survived, I survived, we really quite like one another, that kind of thing!

I just don't understand how grounding could possibly work for someone tall enough to reach the door handle. If a teenager had done something stupid and dangerous enough to require a sanction of some sort, wouldn't they also be bolshy enough to say: "What do you mean, I can't go out? Watch me!".

I don't get it either, particularly as my 2 boys like being here at home anyway.

My parents didn't use that phrase or attempt anything of that sort either.
