20 min naps - is this normal?

Hi

Second time parent but can't actually remember this from dd - ds is nearly 10 weeks old, he's not doing too badly at night but during the day he'll only sleep 20 mins at a time (often only 5...) then wake up obviously still tired & grumpy.

He's swaddled nice and snug and have tried both leaving him to see if he'll go back on his own, or going back in asap and trying to help settle him back, usually with very little luck whatever I try

Is this normal and will the sleep times naturally lengthen on their own? I seem to remember reading somewhere that naps start to lengthen around 12 wks?

Just want to know if I should be trying harder to improve napping now, or if I can wait!
Thanks

Before anyone else suggests it...

Have you tried a sling?

I seem to remember from my Richard Ferber book (now charity shopped) that the normal sleep cycle goes through several stages, and that one of the transitions is after the first 20-25 minutes. So I think as your baby goes from Stage 1 to Stage 2 sleep, he is waking. My ds did the same, anyway, but then gradually started to go through. Hope yours does too!

Google sleep cycles and you should find loads of help..

My DD only slept for 20-30 minutes until she was about 12 months, by which time it had changed to an hour (if lucky) twice a day for another 6 and now she sleeps once a day for an hour and a half/two hours. My friends' children would sleep for the whole day if allowed, from a very early age. Always felt a bit Envy about it but it can't be helped. They will do what they will and if your DS is sleeping well at night I wouldn't worry.
