My DS cannot concentrate

My DS is 3 and a half and has difficulties in concentrating. He cannot sit down and do an activity like reading or listening to a story for more than 5 to 10 minutes. I have tried to get him to focus with no success. Any suggestions that can help us get him to focus please. I am getting anxious because he is due to start school in september. Please help

I think 5 to 10 minutes concentration is quite good for that age for reading or listening to a story.
Does he concentrate longer for things he likes, ie playing with a favourite toy or a favourite tv programme?

when he is watching his favourite programmes or when I read to him his favourite thomas books he can concentrate for longer. Aything else and he wont sit down

The powers that be say: full concentration for 1 minute for every year of their life is adequate ie: your ds should be able to sit and listen or pay attention for 3 mins max at a time

He just finds it hard to concentrate on things he's not that interested in, sounds perfectly normal.

That is completely normal,in fact 5-10 mins is quite a long time for a little one.Ddon't be worried. Teachers will be prepared for children to focus for short periods of time at first and will have frequent changes of activity and opportunties to move around to help. He'll gradually focus for longer as he gets older, really he sounds fine, relax

Hello, just to add my reassurance.

I have four boys and I also work in a Specialist Childrens Team. I work with children with special needs who are under 5.

Your son sounds perfectly fine.
