At what age did your bf babies self wean?

I'm not sure if we are going through another nursing strike or if this is it now with bf. DD turns nine months next week and feeds the past week have been down to less than 20 mins in total, 5-10 in the morning and 10-15 at bedtime. She dropped the afternoon feeds a few weeks ago (I still offer as I work from home) and the past two nights she has refused an evening feed. She will drink 2-3 ounces of formula from a cup at mealtimes as I just don't have time to express anymore.

Is this too early to self wean? She does eat well and so far is maintaining her growth curve, though it is slowing, but she is very active, standing and trying to walk all day.

I'm worried my milk will dry up if it's just a strike, but I would welcome moving on from bf now.

I would like to know your experiences of unforced breast weaning.

DD stopped feeding at 14 months, but led by me. DS is 18 months and still bf. Noticeable difference - by this age he is 'actively continuing' and quite assertive when he wants to feed! Reaches down top, pulls nipple (ouch) and gets himself into position. Has tantrum if I don't let him on! So if anyone plans to stop after or around 1 year, I would stop before they become toddlers Grin

It's very rare for a baby to self wean before 18months. And I know loads of you will come back and say but mine did. The way a baby is weaned onto solids as us restricting nursing to specific time's it a form of parent led weaning. plus natrual weaning is very rarely a sudden stopping of feeding it's usealy a gradual process over week's.

So at this age it is more likly to be a nursing strike see www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/baby/back-to-breast.html of couse you don't have to carry on if you don't want to but you will need to give formula until 12 months.
