Snacks

My 21 month old twin boys have never been big snackers. I usually plan to give them something between their main meals, but they haven't been asking, and often when I think of it it is nearly time for a proper meal so we don't bother.

However, over the last few days this has changed and dt1 has been signing for food quite a lot. He's still eating his meals well - but doesn't seem so hungry that I suspect a big growth spurt. I think it may be the routine of nursery (they go 3 days a week, though for 5 months now) he has settled into.

So - as snacks haven't previously been very substantial or regular I have relied on organix style snacks (and cheese). These work out very expensive if I have to start buying many more, and although I think are well made, they aren't the type of snack I'd like to get the boys into the habit of eating (biscuits and crisps). So what instead?

Has to be quick. More substantial than just fruit (which I'm trying to cut back a bit anyway) and ideally not too messy so I don't have to get them up to the table to eat. My standards for messiness are very low, but don't fancy them lose in the living room with breadsticks and dips.

Shopping tomorrow so all suggestions welcomed.

Cheese
Fingers of toast and marmite
home made flapjack
french toast
carrot sticks
rice crackers

I'm sure lots of other people will have more ideas.

With regards to mess, it's not impossible to have snacks eaten at the table to reduce it.

raisins and other dried fruits, yogurt and fromage frais, vegetables such as carrot sticks and pepper sticks, a mix of cereals like Rice krispies multi-grain shapes and shreddies (I mix these with raisins and it's very nice as an afternoon snack), you can bake your own biscuits and find some nice recipies not too sugary.
