9.5 months boy, slow developer, low IQ?

I hope those of you with older children can help me with a concern I have. My 9.5 month old boy is developing very slowly. He has sat up for the last couple of months, but he does not even attempt to crawl. In fact, he hardly moves, he just learnt to turn from his tummy to his back last week and only does it when I put him on his tummy. He is a very calm baby, and although he is developing at other levels, his gross motor skills are not in line with other babies his age.
Do you think there is a link between this and his level of intelligence?

No I don't at all.

Hi gracej 9.5 months is still to far young, all babie's develop at diffent time's.

My son sat up at about 9 months to, he only started walking 2 month's before his 2nd birthday. He as also only started to say word's.

Don't start worrying now, he is far to young.

I'm not an expert, but I wouldn't consider him slow just because he's not yet crawling at 9.5mths!
My DS crawled at 5.5mths but didn't sit unaided til 9.5mths so it does vary.
Have you spoken to your HV or Dr, if you're worried I'm sure they can put your mind at rest. And, if there is a problem, at least then you'll be having it monitored.

No, absolutely and certainly not. My ds didn't move until he was 14 months when he started to walk. No crawling, no rolling. He turned four in September, can read, count up to wherever, do addition and subtraction, is really honestly a bright boy. the two things are simply not linked unless there is a delay in all areas.

No, I don't think there's a link. He's only 9.5 months old, that's still very young - and they all develop in their own time anyway. The first child to crawl in dd's ante-natal group was 6 months, the last was 14 months. The first to walk was 12 months, the last was 20 months. There's a huge variation in the times they do these things. Just give him a bit of time!

No don't think there is necessarily a link. ds hit all his early milestones, some ahead of others, didn't walk until almost 14 motnsh and has some motor issues which only really manifested themselves when he started school. dn's motor skills were really advanced but he has had speech and language problems.

I really think it is too soon to tell at 9 1/2 months, provided he is developing in other ways. Things just seem to click into place at different rates and in a different order for each individual child.

my dd could sit unaided at 9mths and started crawling at 12. She nows cruises (she's 13mths), pulls herself up and can stands for a few seconds. She'll be walking very soon. I really don't think that physical development has anything to do with intelligence or whatever you want to call it. I don't think your boy is particularly slow either. Give him time, it's not a competition.

gracej · 18/10/2005 17:17

Well, your messages have really encouraged me. Thank you so much, I know it is not a competition but since all the babies in my mom and baby group(all same age) are now crawling I honestly thought there might be a link, it is really reassuring to know that based on your experience with your children there is no link at all. THANKS!!
