Bath water guzzler

CaptainCavemansMummy · 17/10/2005 20:53

My 17 mo ds has started drinking the bath water like he's not had a drink in weeks. Have had to remove all his play cups because he just uses them to drink out of and screams if I try to take them off him.
So now he just sticks his mouth in the water and drinks that way instead.
Faze or something else? Anyone else experience this? I thought I once heard it could be linked to milk intolerance but no signs of that in ds.
He's not drinking more in the day and all other behaviours haven't changed.
?????

No ideas but my 17month old DD is doing exactly the same. I think it has just occured o them that they can. I am sure it will wear off.

DD is milk protein intolerent though.... no idea why there would be a link. She is BF and drinks a lot of water anyway.

NotQuiteCockney · 17/10/2005 21:03

Oh gosh, I think they all do this. They seem to grow out of it.

kuoni · 17/10/2005 21:06

Do they really grow out of it?? My DD1 is 4 and a half and STILL does this. Not worth removing cups etc as she scoops it up with her hand, sucks it from the face cloth and even eats the bubbles. DD2 is just as bad. Anyone would thnk I never let them have a drink. I think it is the warmth of the water that attracts them.
TBH I remember doing this as a child with my sister - making and drinking "bubbble tea" in mini tea parties in shared bathtime (we were very little..)

CaptainCavemansMummy · 17/10/2005 21:09

Ahhh, that's reassuring. I shall return ds's cups forthwith and join him for some bubble tea!
I guess me pulling faces at him which show disproval probably make him want to do it all the more

I think they enjoy being able to serve themselves water.

My DS1 (4) seems to have grown out of this lately. Although that may be because we pointed out that DS2 probably pees in the bath.

hoxtonchick · 18/10/2005 08:06

we still have this from ds who's nearly 4. it drives me mad but doesn't seem to have affected him adversely.

jacqueline1 · 18/10/2005 10:18

My ds has done this since about 17 months too and I just think it's something they do, rather like playing with their tail, than something you're doing or not doing.

The only time I get really concerned is when ds sticks his face in the water to drink and comes up with a bubble goatee beard. I tend not to put too much bubble bath in now.

Elibean · 18/10/2005 20:40

Yep, my DD started doing this at about 16 months and still does (22 months) but much, much less. She's found other ways to amuse herself in the bath now, I think. I found the more I protested, the more fun it became - like most things! Never done her any harm, even with Oilatum in...

Toorisky · 18/10/2005 20:41

My ds2 does this-loves the bathwater!

staceym11 · 18/10/2005 20:56

my dd used to drink the water of the sponge from about 6 months, shes stopped now (shes one) i think its just a phase wouldnt worry too much it aint gunna kill him!!

MiladyMarsLady · 18/10/2005 20:59

DT2 drinks all available liquids that aren't given to him in a cup or bottle. He drinks bath water, plant water, pet water, rain water. He has been known to lie face down in a muddy puddle and drink.

He pours water from plant pots/saucers onto the floor and then drinks it all up. Quite disgusting.... and strangely charming lmao!

Incidentally, this is the boy that can weed your garden for you. He eats his way through them. What a constitution!!!!!!!!!

so glad to hear that all other children prefer to drink whatever they shouldn't rather than what they should
MML, yes ds will also try to drink the cats water if I leave it on the floor when he's about!
Dh had a habit of leaving the toilet door ajar - until he found ds with the toilet rim cleaner in his mouth .

Not read whole thread... but I was about 7 when I stopped doing it

Leahreeve · 19/10/2005 22:25

Guys,
Thank you so much...I was feeling sorry for myself, reading through some threads and burst out laughing at this one (Sorry ) The bit about a sibling probably peeing in the water tickled me the most.
By the way, my DS1 does it and he's 3.5yrs!!!

oops.... the houses on the right hand side. Have the whole house. Not quite as large as the ones on the Ally Pally side... gorgeous aren't they?

Last night DT1 pooed in the bath which DT2 proceeded to drink ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.... and I took them both out... they ran away and pooed on the blimming carpet!
