Why can't my ds learn to pedal?

Probably seems (and probably is!) a rather trivial problem but it's starting to worry me. My 4.5 yr old ds just doesn't seem to understand how to pedal a bike etc. He knows to put his feet on the pedals but no matter what we do to show/help him, he just does not seem to know how to coordinate his feet going round. He has no other problems with coordination/physical development as far as we are aware.

With the weather improving a little I can't help but notice children younger than him at the park on bikes/trikes and ride on toys not having any issues. Ds has been at nursery for a couple of years so has had plenty of opportunity to see others riding around very happily. We're taking him out on his bike frequently, but he just sits there whilst we push him along Blush

Anyone else had this problem and has any tips? TIA.

My DD is nearly 4 and can't pedal either. Have you tried a balance bike with no pedals?

Yes, dh bought him a rather expensive balance bike which he has used a grand total of twice! I think he dislikes it because it doesn't have stabilisers but to be honest he never got the hang of that either.

I'm amazed when I see little ones scooting along on them or whizzing around on bikes without stabilisers when he just doesn't seem to get it.

DS was the same! He used to pedal forwards, then back not round and round. He did get it eventually. DD seemed to be able to pedal instinctively by around 2.5.
