How much sleep does your 6 year old need?

DS suddenly seems to need much less sleep - going from 11 hours a night to seeming to need closer to 9.

He's up OK in the morning, behaving well, and very active -swims at least once every day, leaves for school before 8 and out until 3.30, plus afterschool sports a couple of nights a week.

But not going to sleep until 9, up at 6 prompt. Is that normal for his age? He's in bed relaxing from 7.30, but can't sleep.

dd is 7 and has lights off at 8pm on a school night. She is up around 7am most mornings

DD3 (7 last week) is exactly the same. It is causing some stress here, because DD1 (11) and DD2 (8) still need 10-11 hours.

DD3 never seems tired though. We just don't understand it.

Will watch this!

DS is 7 and generally gets up about 7:30 (think he wakes a bit earlier). Goes to sleep between about 8:30 and 9:00 although in bed a bit earlier.

Thanks. He just seems to have got so much more stamina recently. 9 seems very late for him to be going to sleep.

I struggle to get him to sleep more than 9.5 hours. Which means 8:30pm bedtime, asleep 9ish, and up by 7am most days. I don't want him up any earlier, so can't do an earlier bedtime.

Is that a recent change mloo?

DS has just turned 6, had a growth spurt, new teeth growing, milk teeth falling out, so I wondered if there's a physical change around this sort of age? But he just doesn't need anywhere near as much sleep.

No, not recent, happened kind of suddenly about 18 months ago when he was coming up to 5yo.

With my older ones I make them go to their rooms at the same time (by 8:30pm), even though they don't need much sleep either. I think a lot of people do that, make them go to their rooms, at least on school nights. Part of the wind-down routine for everybody.
