playdate hell

my ds1 4.7 does not seem to able to behave on playdates. He started school in sept and since then we've had 5 playdates, 1 at our house 4 at other childrens. 2 of them were good, but the others were horrible. Yesterday we had a playdate with a girl that he doesnt actually play with. I wasnt sure it was a good idea but agreed as the mum suggested it. It started ok, but then he went a bit hyper running all over the place, snatched a toy and didnt want to give it back, then went to (softly) punch me in the arm when i made him! He never hits me normally and is usually pretty good, but he seems to let himself down in these situations and it makes me really sad cos he is actually a sweet boy. Is this just normal showing off that he will grow out of? It has really put me off doing anymore if i cant rely on reasonable behaviour.

i would stop the play dates for now. school is a big deal - long hours - and they see each other at school all day.

why do play dates as well? i think he's tired and it's all too much for him.

if people ask just say that he gets so tired after school at the mo that he can't cope. maybe in a couple of months...

Sounds like normal showing off and pushing boundaries, just being more excited because of the new situation.

thankyou! He has a younger brother at home to play with anyway and doesnt actually seem that fussed about playdates. Just feel the pressure of fitting in and dont want to let him down. Do you think he will just calm down with age? He was awful at 2 and 3 and has actually really chilled out, but just seems to love winding people up! Is very good at school at least.
