10-month-old only having one daytime nap

My almost-10-month-old is stretching out the gaps between daytime sleeps so that his afternoon nap is getting very late, and sometimes doesn't happen at all.

I'm sure my first DC was still having two naps until he was 14 or 15 months, and asking around friends it seems all their DCs had two naps until they were at least a year old. So I think 10 months is very early to be dropping the second one. But don't want to spend ages battling to get him to sleep if he doesn't need/want it.

Anyone got any experience of this?

DS2 went down to 1 nap when he was 8/9 months old but it's also partly because I have DS1 and I just don't have the time to put him down for a nap most days. Blush He's now almost 15 months old and I can see him giving up his daytime nap by 18 months old! Shock DS1 didn't give up his nap till he was 2.6... Hmm

Ha ha, yes, I know what you mean about having DS1 as well. I can only spend so long trying to settle DS2 to sleep, and if it doesn't happen then I am much quicker to give up.

Both my DC down to 1 nap a day by that age.

mine (twins) switched to one nap at 11 months old and it was soo much better. Their one nap was then 2 hours whereas before it was 2 naps but only 45 minutes each. A massive improvement for me!!!!

If he seems happy enough on one sleep then am sure it is fine! So much easier for you too!

From what I remember (which is not a great deal now that my brain has turned into a sieve!) my DD1 was about 11 months when she went down to one sleep.

My 10 months old were having a quick 30 minute nap at about 9.30am and a longer hour and a half or two at about 12.30/1.00pm.

They certainly weren't having an afternoon nap or late afternoon nap at that stage.

What time does he have his nap?

chillipickle · 29/01/2011 23:26

On a typical day he wakes up between 7 and 7.30am, and goes to sleep at some point between 10.30 and 11ish. He generally sleeps for 1.5 hours, but sometimes longer (it was two hours today). Until recently he was having a slightly earlier/shorter morning nap, and another one at about 2.30pm.

Glad to hear it's not unheard of for a baby of his age to manage on just one sleep.

In some ways it's simpler with just one nap, but I have a three-year-old as well, and having two naps (even short ones) gave me a chance to sort things out for the next meal and maybe spend a bit of time playing with my older dc.

At the moment it's a pain as the baby is tending to sleep through lunchtime. But I dare say it will change again in another few weeks.

My DD is 18m and has only ever had one proper nap a day (and that didn't really start until about 10m!)
