Bickering Friends

My sons friend has just joined the same school as him (they're both 9 years old), and I have a real problem with them bickering all the time.
The friends Mother and I asked for them to be in separate classes because of this reason, which the school kindly accommodated for us.
Unfortunately the situation seems to have escalated with them both point scoring against each other, vying for the same friends (they don't seem to be able to be friends all together), and always being negative about the other person.
It's impossible for them to be away from each other at breaks, as it is a small school and all the boys play together as a group.
His Mother and I have both spoken to the boys separately to try to stop this, but it doesn't seem to be working.
We're both really frustrated, and I wondered if anyone has any ideas on what we can do next?

Are they actually "friends" or just aquaintances who know each othe due to your friendship with the mother?

Do they spend lots of time together out of school?

They do see each other out of school, as I am friends with the Mother. They seem to treat each other like sibling, and have no respect for one another.
