Bickering Friends

My sons friend has just joined the same school as him, and I have a real problem with them bickering all the time.
The friends Mother and I asked for them to be in separate classes because of this reason, which the school kindly accommodated for us.
Unfortunately the situation seems to have escalated with them both point scoring against each other, vying for the same friends (they don't seem to be able to be friends all together), and always being negative about the other person.
It's impossible for them to be away from each other at breaks, as it is a small school and all the boys play together as a group.
His Mother and I have both spoken to the boys separately to try to stop this, but it doesn't seem to be working.
We're both really frustrated, and I wondered if anyone has any ideas on what we can do next?

Wait til they hit teens !!!! Sorry no help x I'd let them get on with it. They have to learn to sort things out themselves. I used to get so worried if DD has a row with her friend. I used to try and talk to the other mother etc. to no avail. Used to cause me so much stress. The school will let you know if it gets out of hand.
