16 month won't sleep in his cot

My DC has recently got into the habit kicking off when put in their cot. he'll wake up and a bring him in with me , when he is finally asleep which can be like hours away.

I'll place him in his cot and and as soon as he touches the mattress he turns round stand up and starts crying, so frustrating I could cry.

Any tips on what to do?

Stick to a rigid bed time routine so your child knows what to expect. Don't vary each step.
eg. Bath, teeth, story, song.
Then lowering your voice tell him your are going to put him into his cot because it is time to go to sleep.
Place you child in the cot with a favourite toy.
When he kicks off, return to the room after 10 mins but leave the light off, lay him back down and cover him over, stroke his head and gently tell him it is time to go to sleep.
Repeat the last stage (probably about 50 times).
Never take him into your bed unless you don't mind him sleeping with you because you are giving him mixed messages. If you want him to sleep in his cot then he has to stay in his cot.
