Drinking and BFing (again?)

I'm sure this has been discussed alot here before but what are people's view on drinking and BFing? I regularly have a glass or two of wine and then BF DS. Reading through all the advice online, it seems that the main effect is on your let down reflex. What are other people's view?

I was the same when i bf'd dd1. but i only did it for about 5 weeks. not sure it had any effect really. a friend is bf her baby (6 weeks od i think) and has found that if she had champagne the baby was not too well afterwards (fine with wine though!). i would say if it all seems fine, then a glass or 2 can't hurt. in fact, my nct teacher said you can have 6 units before it affects your milk!

I found that alcohol had an effect on my letdown, but nothing that DS wouldn't persevere past!

I found champagne caused problems too, weirdly it made DS very windy. No problems with wine, G&T or beer though Grin

Since DS was about 3 months (he's now 6 months) I have been drinking pretty normally - trying to stick to the recommended maximum of 14 units per week, though I probably go over sometimes. I've never noticed any effect on him from anything I've eaten or drunk, certainly not alcohol. I don't think I've had any champagne in that time though! We've got a bottle in the fridge so will look out for any problems when we drink that...

As far as I know the advice is that if you're sober enough to care for your baby responsibly, you're sober enough to breastfeed.

Kellymom has some info.

I was worried about bf-ing when my 4MO woke up unexpectedly for a further feed after I'd put her to bed (she usually sleeps 11-12 hours at night) and I had drunk 2 large glasses of wine that day - on Xmas day. It was over about 6 hours though. I rang my Mum and she said she bf-ed me and my sister after a few glasses a few times and all that it did was make us sleep well. She also said to drink plenty of water before and during the feed to help with let down as otherwise the milk can be a bit slow or dry. Since then I've been careful not to drink any more than one glass (after she's gone to bed), just in case she wakes, as although I'm happy to feed her after one glass of wine, I still feel a bit guilty about that Xmas day feed when I'd had two glasses!
