Morning wailing

My 16 month old DS is fine going to sleep, sleeps through the night... but then wakes every morning and wails and screams, getting worked up into a real state even if we go in quite quickly. It's particularly a problem if he wakes up early - sometimes we can shush him back to sleep and sometimes he won't go back to sleep or wakes up 10 minutes later and cries again.

What we're not sure is whether it's linked to a bad cough he's had for a long time or whether getting upset in the morning is something that can happen unrelated to this. He does cheer up once he's had some milk, so I suppose it might be hunger, but it does seem very dramatic for that. Has anyone else's DC done this?

My dd is six now but as a little toddler she used to do exactly the same - she was even worse when she woke after her nap. Too beside herself to pay any attention to me trying to work out what was up. I decided it was hunger too, and it stopped when I stopped ever letting her go to sleep without stuffing her with food (lol). She is still prone to an odd bout of wailing now...
