My dd keeps stealing from her friends!

She is nearly 4 and has just starting taking things from her friends house. Nothing major, hair slides, little toys etc. I've told her it is naughty but she doesn't seem to take any notice.

How can I nip this in the bud, before she gets herself into trouble?

make her return them immediately with a full apology to her friend and the mummy

Normally I would, but I've got a feeling that dd's friends mum, will make a huge thing of it. I imagine there would be lots of jibes and comments about dd and I'm not sure I can handle that or that it would help.

its the only way to teach her that stealing is wrong. If she has already noticed then she will surely jibe about her anyway.

My friend hasn't noticed, dd showed me what she had taken.

your daughter thinks it is ok to steal because she gets to keep it! regardless of what you say to her, she will still do it because there is no come-back

get her to take the things back, or she will never learn!

scaryman · 04/10/2005 18:09

She will be taking the things back, there is no doubt about that. I just didn't know whether to make a huge deal of it or just give them back quietly.

i would just get her to say to the other girl, "sorry i took these home with me"
then hand them back and that's that. so, not really a big deal.

do make a big deal if she carries on afterward though1

LadyFioOfTipton · 04/10/2005 18:16

she most probably is just taking them without realising

my ds is nearly four and he has stole stuff from shops, but he doesnt understand it is wrong and some of the stuff he gets is quite goos reallyu
