7mo too young for baby signing class?

I'm planning on joining a sing and sign class with DS (nearly 7mo) but I'm wondering if I'm being a bit premature in starting this term... the other option would be to leave it til after Easter when DS will be around 10 months.

Does anyone have experience of attending baby signing classes, and if so when would be the best time to start, in your opinion?

We started sing and sign at 7 months..my DD loved it..she started signing at 9 months..she still loves watching the dvds now she is 3!!!

Either - the singing and everything will be fun even if he doesn't pick up signs, and if you don't know signing already it'll make it easier for you.

I did a couple classes at 5mo as they were free (ds a bit overwhelmed), and then from 10mo until 2.3 - sadly he's really too old now.

I'd ask what the age range is - if all the babies are up to 1ish it would be fine but if they're up to 2ish it might be scary for a little one.

Ach, no, I took DD from about 4 months; she didn't really grasp the concept until she was about, ooh, 3 or something but it's still getting out of the house.
And she did grin away at me while we were doing it, and you meet other mums etc etc so well worth it IMO. As long as you're not expecting much of a response!

I started baby signing with DS at 7 months - he had only just started sitting up so I can remember! It was great at this age - he really enjoyed it and did sign for duck at about 9 mnths (the one and only sign he ever did!).

Thanks for your replies - I think we'll give it a go for this term then! I'll just have to reign in my pushy parenting enthusiasm and not expect too be having deeply intellectual signed conversations with DS by the end of class 1!

Another one here who doesn't think it's too early! We started when DD was only 3m ish, and I only went to have something to do! In fact, at first he slept through half the classes but I like the other mums there and made some lovely friends. DS signed his first word (milk) at 6 months but then it was only around 10/11m that he started other words (aeroplane, drink) and only in the last month (13/14 m) that he has started signing all the time! I'm having trouble keeping up now :) I was shocked when he started coming out with them because (if I'm honest) I really didn't do that often at home, so he must have picked them up from class..!

We started signing with DS (no classes) at 6 months; he used his first at 9 months, stopped a month later and at 12 months hasn't resumed it.

He definitely understands them though.

Apparently a few signs at 9 months and then lots from around 13 months is very common.

I'd start as early as you like - I'd start much sooner with any DC2.

We started when ds1 was 5 months, we still go now at 21months and obviously I have to take my ds2 with me who's 16weeks.

Ds1 doesn't talk yet so signing really helps.

Fine age to start. I took DS from 6 months and Ds started using signs from 8 months.
