When did your LO stop having naps?

DD has been in a fantastic sleep routine since she was 8 months old:

7pm - bed
7am - wake
9am - nap (90-120 mins)
1pm - nap (60-90 mins)
7pm - bed

She will be 12 months in a couple of weeks, and for the last week she has resisted the afternoon nap... She either has 30 minutes, or won't sleep at all in the afternoon. I'm hoping this is just a temporary blip, but i'm afraid it could be the beginning of the end of the afternoon nap. I think she's teething, so maybe that could be disrupting her routine? Her morning nap is still going strong.

If your LO had good established naps at this sort of age, when did he/she drop them off?

My DS2 went down to 1 nap when he was only about 8-9 months old. He would often fall asleep at about 11am and sleep for a good 2-3 hours and that would be it. Though sometimes this nap can be as short as an hour and he has been known to have the odd 30 minute nap to last all day! If I were you, I would try to push the morning nap to a little later, slowly push it back bit by bit till about noon or so? DS2 is now 13.5 months old and has one nap - anytime from 11am till 1pm. Then she wouldn't be too grumpy in trying to last all afternoon... DS1 went down to one nap fairly late (probably about 13-14 months) but he was a stickler for his routine. It will vary from child to child but it does sound like DD could be ready for one nap though the transition might take a while i.e. some days she will still do 2 naps etc.

DD went through a phase at around 13-14 months of being all over the shop with her naps. The afternoon one got later and later, and then she dropped it completely. But it took a few weeks for her to adjust and bring the morning one closer to the middle of the day. So for a little while she was going down far too early to last her until bed time!

She sorted herself out, and now has a 1-2hr nap somewhere between 12-2.

About 3 years old - he does try to sneak a nap now so have to keep an eye on him. It is fatal as he does not go to bed til ten oclock if he has a nap now and we have has enough for one day...

At 12 months she may be ready to drop 1 nap or at least have a much shorter one and a long one .The morning nap was the least important one to me, as it was easier to keep them happy at playgroups etc. I sometimes let them have a mini cat nap 20 mins ( i woke them up) sometime between 9-am 10am. then putting them down for a nap for 2 hours after lunch.
As a nanny and mum- this is what I always did for my 12 month olds

7 am awake
9-10 am ( max 20 minute power nap - or none at all if they can )
12pm lunch
12.30 -3pm 2-3 hours
7pm bed

Around 12 months my DD dropped to one nap a day - we prevented her from napping at 9am and pushed her to a lunch time (12.30pm or 1pm) nap which she maintained until she turned 2.3 yrs and then dropped all naps.

Could you drop the morning nap (distracting her like crazy so she doesn't fall asleep then) and let her nap around midday?

Both mine went down to 1 sleep at 10 months. DD1 cut out naps altogether at 19 months, DD2 cut them out at 17 months.

ds stopped napping during the day from about 3 years old.
dd is just a year now and only naps for half an hour, so I think she will drop her nap much earlier.

My DS is 4 next week and still has a 1 - 1 1/2 hr nap in the afternoon. He goes to bed at 7 pm and sleeps 11 - 12 hours. Hope he drops the nap before he starts school next Spetember.

My DD dropped her last nap at just past two.

Very different sleep needs.

polarfox · 21/12/2010 16:53

My DS did exactly as mummyosaurus, he stopped when he started reception (Still had them at weekends and holidays! till he was 6). He always loved his sleep , but he is also very active so on the go when awake.

Middle one, stopped at 10 months, so huge deifference...........

Hello,
DS dropped from 2 naps to 1 at 12 months, then dropped this one at nearly 4 Smile.

DD stayed on 2 naps something like 10-11am and 2-3pm, sometimes longer, until 18 months then went to one nap 12-2, or 1-3 which she is still on age 2 and I hope will stay on for another year or so!!

They both went through phases of not napping/napping "schedule" being completely out, but only for short times during teething/illness/change of routine.

jinglebellssantasmells · 21/12/2010 20:13

DD originally had one morning nap around half 10 and one around 3

at around 13 months she dropped the 3 oclock one and gradually the morning one moved later, now at 20 months sum days she does not nap at all

SkyBluePearl · 21/12/2010 20:16

3 and a half years or 4 years is when he stopped. He was still sleeping well at night even with a good day time nap.
