13 months old want to feed himself with spoon...

dinner is becoming a mess and war all the time...
everything is flying away from ds spoon...
he scream as he wants to grap his spoon...try with 2 spoons..stil doesn't work...
try finger foods in the meantime ...I can feed him he's just stubborn and want to eat with the spoon.,....he can yet...
end up with no dinner...after one our fighting he had a bit of yogurt,,,
use to be a good eater...I think still is...if would let me feed him.....
please help..any solutions...any gina ford..

I'd just let him have finger foods. DS2 has always hated being fed. Lots of things can be finger foods - penne and fusilli are very popular at the moment.

Or you can feed him very thick foods, like mashed potato? That can stick to the spoon IYSWIM.

when you say you've tried 2 spoons do you mean you let him 'try' and then shovel it in when he is distracted? cos that is what i'd recommend!

iF i Give him finger food he eats couple and then start to play with them and throw it in the floor...half an hour later is hungry and there is not food left,,,because he's been playing with them...

yeah popmum....it use to work give him one spoon and try to feed him with another...

it's not working anymore......

give him 2 spoons?? one of those high chair toys for awhile ? sorry....!

My ds is starting to get bored with being fed as well. I give him finger foods too, I find that it is better to give him one thing to eat at a time, if I give him more too many things, he trashes them and makes a huge mess on his tray.
If I give him say, four small bits of avocado that is fine, but if I give him that plus egg plus tomato he starts to mash them all up and smears them over the tray.
Try oatcakes with liver pate, just hand him a bit and then another until he has finished, it's quite surprising how much they eat.
I think that it is around one year when you can allow them to start feeding themselves with a spoon.
Could he practice in the kitchen or somewhere with a wipe clean floor, maybe he will be happier if he gets to try feeding himself sometimes.

weve started giving thicker food. Ie mashed potato, porridge. Anything that sticks to a spoon

I would just give him his dinner, stand back or sit and eat mine and try not to notice, just let him get on with it. Clean the mess up and do the same at the next meal, if he really can't manage and starts to get hungry he will soon let you help again. Worked with my ds

Mine too! I'm happy to let him get on with it himself, and he makes plenty of mess but he does eat so I'm ok with that. DH finds it v v difficult to wait to clean up but he's fighting a losing battle!

this might freek a few of you out but our ds gets on very well with a square-ended pastry fork, good for most finger foods, and even 'pieces' of porrige this morning cause it had gone cold (and sultanas are a good time filler)

most important: hasnt come near to pronging himself atall, but deffo feels like the bees knees when food captured sticks & makes it to mouth. Less on the floor to scavenge later tho ha ha

Our dd got like this and then we realised that she was much happier if she was eating the same as us... We try to all eat together whenever possible and then she is always watching and trying to copy us (or her brother...good grief, bad table manners!) This way she is entertained and is eating without really realising it!
Also, we only give her a little bit at a time: sometimes she throws her food on the floor because she is overwhelmed with it.

My DD has never liked being fed with a spoon she flatly refused anything pureed after about 8 months, she has a variety of finger foods (shes 14 mo now) whatever we are eating, last night she had roast chicken dinner, little bits of chicken, peas, carrots, green beans and sweetcorn, little roast potatoes cut up and mashed potato on a spoon (she even got some in her mouth) mealtimes are always a mess but I just don't let it get to me just go with the flow. Sometimes it's hard to know what to give her finger food wise though.
