how do I stop my 11mo screaming until he turns purple?

and I mean really screaming - v high pitched and intense until his face goes purple, with lots of tears. It sounds like he's doing it deliberately but I'm not sure if I should ignore it in the hope he'll stop doing it (which seems a bit mean - he is crying, after all), or treat as normal crying with cuddles/distraction/whatever (which might encourage it, and it's a really horrible noise).

Is this just a phase?

have you tried blowing into his face, I know it sounds a bit awful but sometimes it's enough for them to stop and think a second and then he may not bother starting again........or he may laugh and that might help
