6 month odl DD sucks either of her thumbs and obviously sucks them so hard that they actually look like they have love bites on them. When i touch them she doesn't seem bothered so i guess it's not hurting her but it looks sore and swollen. IS this normal for a young thumb sucker does anyone know??

my ds used to do this when he was teething..would really chew it to bits.its how i knew he was teething even if he wasnt grizzly.

might be the same ..might not

My dd started sucking her thumb at 10 weeks old (she's now 2) and every so often it gets red and swollen. She's also gotten a callous twice but it doesn't seem to bother her.

The fun is going to come is trying to wean her off the thumb!!

LIZS · 19/09/2005 20:40

dd did the same. By a year she'd gnawed intot he flesh and got it infected . Tried bandaging it to discourage her but she sucked it off and I worried she'd choke at night. She is 4 now and still sucks it when tired but now only has a tiny blister.

oh heck, not what i wanted to read! She doesn't suck it often but when she does, she really must be going for it huh?

DS2 does this - every so often his thumb looks like it's getting really sore (last week I nearly took him to GP but couldn't appointment [wink}) and then it suddenly seems to be OK again. Very weird.
He's 2 BTW and it's never got infected as far as I can see.

I sucked my thumb so much as a child I had a permanent raised callous till I was....erm, don't like to say actually...far too old, anyway! My thumbs are now perfectly fine and normal looking.

one of my dd sucked her thumb and it got so red and sore that one day she changed to her index finger. She stopped sucking her that when she gave up the muslim square at about 31/2 yr tht she also used as a comfort.

Bu tbh even now at 11yr shes always got something in her mouth

My dd3 occasionally has a red, dry, sore-looking thumb. I'm pretty sure its when she's teething, maybe she sucks it more then. It usually clears up on its own after a couple of days.

my babe is a thumb-o-holic and often sucks it until it is red swollen and sometimes raw. I put nipple cream on it (on advice from dr) as it creates a barrier to allow thumb to dry and is ok for baby to suck (after all they suck it when it is put on cracked nipples) It works really well and hasnt got an unpleasant taste or anything. The one we use is basically pure lanolin.

great tip yawningmonster - thank you. I put aqueous cream on them this morning but the nipple cream sounds like a much better idea.

That is a good idea - and a good use for my left over nipple cream! DD only started sucking her thumb at nearly two, but now has a red area of broken skin on it - she even pointed to it yesterday and sain 'bit sore'.
