Hi all, just wondering does anyone know how old babies have to be to have infant gaviscon and does it need to be prescribed by the doctor?

yes you need a doctors to prescribe it but they can have it from quite little (cannot recall exactly!) .

Mine had it from 6 weeks, bunged him up royally but did the job with the reflux. I think you need a prescription for it if they're under 3yrs....or maybe it's 1yr....but I just lied to the pharmacist (I ran out of prescribed packets once) and she gave it to me Blush

You give a half dose if they're under 12weeks, I think, or a certain weight.

She's 6 weeks so i'll make an appointment with the doctor tomorrow. Im not sure if it is reflux but she's really not happy at all recently. Keeps really gulping and arching her back and gasping, she's normally a really good sleeper but just can't settle at all over the last few days. We've swapped her onto anti colic bottles recently from just regular cheap bottles i wonder if this has made a difference.

Thanks for all the help, she's managed an hour of broken sleep just now which is the best she's had all day, the poor things looks exhusted. It's going to be one hell of a night :(

I've used this recently - if they weigh under 4.5 kg(10lb I think,) it's one sachet, 2 sachets if over. My dd has just grown out of this, I had one of these, it really helped at night.

be aware it makes lots of babies constipated so stock up on lactulose - it isnt a laxative it just draws water into the bowel to help them go more easily (doesnt enter blood stream etc), my DD had to ahve 7ml 3 times a day at that age to help counter act the gaviscon.

Oh, good luck newmum, it's a pain in the arse but it gets better, sometimes quite quickly.

Hope last night was ok

LOADS of advice on Mumsnet and here if it does turn out to be reflux. Even if they're not sure, lots of the advice here is general enough to be useful
