Hi

Has anybody here used a child psychologist? If so did it help and how is it best to find a good one.

Psychologists can be useful for a wide variety of things. best thing to do is see your GP, they can refer you to your local CAMHS, or signpost you somewhere more appropriate if necessary. SENCOs also refer.

Thank you mymble. I just wanted to get an independent assessment really - without making a GP issue. I'm not sure if we have a problem - but am finding it increasingly difficult to deal with. Don't want to label DC as such - may be just my perception. What do you think?

What sort of symptoms are you seeing? What are you worried about? There is bound to be information on the web which may or may not reassure you, it's always best to get a professional diagnosis.

Don't worry about if its your perception, let the experts decide, at least that way you will have reassurance and won't need to worry any more :)

Hello Mary

She's been behaving a bit strangely since starting reception. Although academically she's progressing fine and she's playing with other DCs well and making friends, she won't speak to the teacher and TA very much and is being a bit disruptive by charging about the classroom. The teacher told me at parents' evening that they thought it was very odd that she was pretending to be an animal a lot. My DD told the teacher she had a dog lead and bowl at home, which the teacher believed. (She has some toy dogs and one of them has a collar and lead). She has always had a bit of a problem talking to adults but tbh it's been improving. So I think it's mainly a bit of a social behaviour thing really. Have since spoken to a couple of friends who think the teacher is being a bit OTT. My DD tells me school is "hateful" and "boring". So am at a bit of a loss really.
