Not sitting up at 7 and a half months

DS2 has been commando crawling for about 3 weeks and he is getting quite fast. He is also on all fours, rocking back and forth a lot.

But, whenever he is put down to sitting, he just launches forward, head first, so he gets onto his belly. He loves being on his front, even changing his nappy is a full on holding down exercise.

Any similar experiences? Should I be encouraging him to sit up?

Thanks

He will do it in his own good time. He has obviously decided that being mobile is more important than sitting still! My DD is 8 months and can sit, but no sign of crawling yet.........they all go at their own pace.

My DS was the same.. commando crawled as soon as he could (7, nearly 8 months IIRC) and pretty much 2 days later was pulling up on the furniture Shock He didn't sit up until 9.5 months though. I honestly think he just didn't want to sit still! He's 2 now and still doesn't :)

Oh yes and nappies... as soon as he can stand, switch to pull ups. They are as absorbent as normal nappies and will save you SO MUCH grief. (The Huggies Little Walkers were the best IME) For poos strip baby off (nappy last of all) and place in bath, hose down with shower, taking care to avoid their head if you wish to avoid triggering a lifelong fear of showers!

thanks all for posting, very reassuring. ds1 was total opposite, sat at 6 months, stayed there until he crawled at 11 months! so alien having a baby who won't sit still. he's going to keep me on my toes!

Does he sit to eat?
I think all these other posters are absolutely spot on - he is too busy being mobile to want to sit and admire the view!
I strongly suspect it is not so much CAN'T sit still as doesn't WANT to - too much mischief to get into!

DS was the same, he walked at 9months+5 days... he could stand for several minutes long before he could sit.

Be careful what you wish for, tiny babies walking everywhere is a hazard!

(ps: don't pull-ups cost a lot more than ordinary nappies? We got buy with regular ones and cloth until past 2yo, anyway). We also showered them off once they could stand, :).

ElbowFan - he is sitting more now to eat, yes. Although he's in quite a cushioned high chair, so it's difficult to know properly. He definitely likes being mobile.

Ragged - I'm certainly not wishing him to get more mobile quicker than he needs to! I'd minimise that window of mobility combined with no common sense if I could Grin. He's totally shunning his own toys for his big brothers toys, much to his brothers annoyance!

My DS2 was the same, commando crawling, then finally worked out how to sit up properly, then crawled properly. I figured he was just trying to keep up with DS1.
