DS Sleeping on his face- slightly concerned!

Hello all,

I am sorry if this is a topic that has come up before, I am new to Mumsnet and just wanted to see if anyone had any advice. My 6 month old son has started to sleep face down in his cot. He starts off on his back, and when we go and check on him, all we can see is the back of his head and it's rather worrying.

He is rolling over perfectly well on his own, so we hope that should he get uncomfortable, he would roll himself over, but does anybody have any advice as to how to prevent this? Or if this is something to be really concerned about? I have tested it for myself on our mattress and I can breathe just about!

Thank you for any help advice in advance!

Our DD never slept on her back. She was a tummy sleeper from the day she was born. I think children's noses are designed to let air in.
Don't stress yourself.

Once they can roll over on their own, they are fine sleeping on their front.

Thank you for your responses! It's not just that he is sleeping on his front, it's that he is sleeping nose down in to the mattress! Did yours do that too??

Don't worry! My DS did exactly the same and as Tee2072 said, once they can roll they are fine sleeping on their front and as kreecher said, they have the ability to breath. I used to run in every 5 minutes like a mum possessed lol but she was fine. She is a toddler now and she still does it! She loves pushing her head right up against the headboard too.

But, I still get worried so feel silly telling you not to!!

Ooops...my DD NOT DS Blush

DD used to do it as well, I never understood how she could be comfortable.

StarExpat · 17/10/2010 20:23

Ds did that from newborn - only slept on tummy. We had an angelcare breathing monitor just to be absolutely sure :) I recommend it!

Oh, and she LOVES pulling the covers up over her head!! I go in and pull them back down but every time I check on her, her head is back under the covers!! Pointless exercise but makes me feel better Smile

Thank you for all your responses! You have all made us feel better. I have heard of the angel care monitors, I am going to look in to them now. Looks like they could be a good investment if only for our peace of mind and to achieve a good night's sleep! Thanks again :)
