Firework displays and toddlers

Do you think a 2.5 year old is too young to be taken to a firework display? My ds says he'd like to go but I'm concerned that the noise would be too much for him. Should I wait until he's a bit older?

Get some ear defenders for him - they make all the difference

Depends on the child. My ds loves fireworks and has never been frightened by them....we took him to 2 displays over the summer when he was 2.3yrs and really enjoyed them. He's soooo excited for bonfire night! Having said that though, a neighbours little boy is 4 and is terrified of them. He has never liked them and prefers to stay indoors.

Is there a small local display you could take him to so if he doesnt like it you can easily take him home? Theres a place near us that have a childrens display early on and then save all the really loud rockets for the later display.

I would take him, but be prepared to make a quick exit if its too much for him.

My DD has been going since 2yo and loves it, but my friends DD (same age) screamed blue murder when she came, and was absolutely terrified.

Ear defenders, ours are from Amazon IIRC.

Lots of snacks might help.

And maybe let him watch some displays on youtube first so he knows what to expect.

FWIW my DS is almost 4 and I think this is the first year he will go to a display. Last year he watched the local display out of the window and for the first time he wasn't scared.

Thanks for the replies, have just ordered a pair of ear defenders so hopefully he'll wear them on the night Smile.

I have decided not to go....my dd is 2 and a half and my other is 6...in the past their Dad has done a few in the garden but they watch behind the blinking window and jump!

DH is away wth work so I am having sparklers...hot dogs and toasted marshmallows...fr kinder to the little one in particular!

KERALA1 · 17/10/2010 20:39

Yes. Its a terrible idea dont do it! We had a "firework" display in the garden last year with my two dd and two friends. Therefore 5 children all between 3.5 and 18 months. They were absolutely terrified. It was only in our back garden and was one very gentle firework but all the children were sobbing and wanted to go back indoors. We all congratulated ourselves on not having gone to an official showing where we would have had to drive, walk from the car, disrupt the usual tea/bedtime thing and been out in the dark. Plenty of years to do this when they are older.

taffetawitchescat · 17/10/2010 20:49

My DS (6) is very noise sensitive, so he hates them. DD (4) not very keen either. Cat will also no doubt be terrified, his first year, so no way would we leave him on his own. < more worried about cat than DC >

Sparklers, sausages and ginger cake here only.

ForMashGetSmash · 17/10/2010 21:02

Yes....sparklers are MUCH more fun for little ones...its awful to see them scared. My DH is not Britsh and the whole thing terrifies him! He cannot believe we're all allowed to set them off in tiny back yards..

whomovedmychocolate · 17/10/2010 21:04

I am not keen on fireworks but both mine think they are fab Hmm. Ear defenders are very important though. If nothing else you will end up carting the kids back to the car to snooze with you while your DH finishes his snorker and then they will nod off.

snowybun · 17/10/2010 21:36

My two love them they are 6 and 2. We have always taken them since babies every August we have weekly fireworks at the seafront.
My dd she is the two year old she didn't like the noise this year but with ear muffs she was fine. My ds had a dislike 2 years ago but gets so excited by them now.
