DS 8 months sits really well, but no signs of crawling, hates tummy time and although stands with our help doesn't pull himself up....worry??

My DD never crawled. Rolled a lot and then walked at 8 months. I put both down to her having big feet (too big to crawl and good for balancing on). She's 11 now :)

Feenie · 15/10/2010 22:12

Mine was the same, didn't crawl till 15 months then got so good at it that he didn't walk till he was 2 years and 2 months!

He is 4 and a half now, and you wouldn't be able to tell - he is fantastic at throwing and football!

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 15/10/2010 22:13

Same as DS was.

He's now 9 and I'd love to sellotape him to the spot but apparently it's not allowed.

nope. dd never rolled hated tummy time, would just sit like a little pudding on a cushion all the time. fast forward two months and she was crawling and cruising easily.

but she was rather "broad of beam" Smile, so it probably took a lot of effort to move. once she was moving she became a right skinny little thing.

have since had ds who has been a skinny minnie since birth. he is already limbering up for walking!

Tgger · 15/10/2010 22:16

Didn't ever crawl, but started bottom shuffling at 11 months and walking at 18. Don't worry, some don't crawl till a lot later.

DS crawled but not until 11 months and then walked at 16 and a bit.

GraceK · 15/10/2010 22:18

Do you have wooden floors? We did in our last house & DD1 didn't bother crawling - went straight to pulling up on furniture, then cruising at 10 mths. Did crawl a bit after this when at grandparents, who do have carpet. She hated tummy time too from day1.

DD2 loves tummy time & it's her preferred position to sleep or watch tv so am expecting her to give crawling a try.

Crawling isn't counted as a developmental stage as not everyone does it - my mum says I never did - just rolled to my objective then went straight to walking. My sisteronly commando crawled, so never did it properly either. Don't worry about it too much

Hazeyjane · 15/10/2010 22:19

dd2 never crawled, she bumshuffled until she was 21 months old.

She was referred to a physio when she was 19 months old, because she wouldn't bear any weight on her legs (never pulled herself up, wouldn't go on her knees), and if you tried to stand her against something her feet rolled out, so it looked like she was stood on her ankle bones.

They said her ligaments were overly flexible, and recommended we put her in solid clompy shoes, she started walking pretty soon afterwards

I would say 8 months is pretty early to worry about it. If he gets to 18 months without wanting to bear weight etc, ask your gp to refer you.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 15/10/2010 22:21

DS1 didn't crawl, sat up, then one day started crusing, no crawling at all.
DS2 crawled as did DS3 and DD is showing signs of wanting to crawl.
All babs different, no need to worry. :)

pointydog · 15/10/2010 22:21

dd2 didn't really crawl. At 10 months she would just sit in the middle of the room like a lump, watching what went on around her with her thumb in her mouth.

She walked at 12 montsh.

ooooooeak · 15/10/2010 22:24

Thanks all. We are at the "if you move out of my line of sight I will SCREAM!" stage and not being able to move to me or a toy is frustrating him! Me too!

DS1 commando crawled at 9 months, then just got up and walked at 10months.

DS2 didn't start crawling until near on 10months and walking at 13months.

HV did say that a lot of babies skip crawling so not to worry about it too much. I think babies who crawl before 8 months are not the rule but the exception.

seanbonfire · 15/10/2010 22:27

My first never crawled- she was a bottom shuffler and got up some speed. Didn't walk till 16mths, but then bottom shufflers apparently walk later.

Number two crawled and walked at 14mths. Number three crawled and walked at 11mths, so all different.

I think 8 mths is a bit young to be worrying tbh, plenty of 8mth olds aren't crawling

susitwoshoes · 15/10/2010 22:33

my DD was exactly like this, OK on her tummy but not all that keen, very good sitter, liked standing but didn't pull herself up, has rolled maybe twice, could move around in a circle and backwards for weeks and weeks ('ooh, she's on the verge of crawling' - no, she's been doing that for ages) - and then all of a sudden last Friday evening she crawled. 9.5 months. Has been zooming round ever since. Still very clingy, only she she can crawl over to me and wail rather than sit and wail Smile. So you never know, it could happen at any moment!

chipmonkey · 15/10/2010 23:12

8 months is really too young for you to be worrying about this. FWIW ds4 didn't crawl till he was 11 month, didn't walk till 20 months but at 2.6 can now run around and kick a ball with amazing accuracy.

The babies don't actually read the baby books so they have no idea what they're "supposed" to be doing.

Firawla · 15/10/2010 23:24

he's only 8 months! i wouldn't worry, sounds fine...
lately i keep hearing from a lot of people that their babies never crawled they just skipped it. so you never know he may go straight to walking, or there is plenty of time for him to crawl
my 10 months (well v nearly 10 months) not crawling yet, he is doing same as you have discribed + he can go backwards but more of a sliding over the floor than a crawl. ds1 didnt crawl til 9.5 month either

Mairi261 · 15/10/2010 23:25

Nothing new to say here, but for the record my older son didn't crawl until his first birthday, despite having held weight on his feet from an early age (about 2 months I think) also didn't walk steadily until 16 months. Now a strong nearly-4 year old, running, great at kicking a football/rugby ball/etc.

My younger son started rolling around at 7 months, crawled soon after and tbh I was wishing he was like his brother and would wait, cos I had the 2 of them to chase round after....!

Really don't think you need to worry until your son is a lot older. Smile

PurpleZombiesOnABloodyPillow · 15/10/2010 23:27

DD1 now 10yrs never crawled either did the bum shuffle thingy then walked 10 days before her first birthday Grin

Hazeyjane · 15/10/2010 23:30

apparently a lot less children crawl now because they don't spend as much time on their tummies.

SummerRain · 15/10/2010 23:56

ds1 never did... sat on his arse like a sack of spuds til 12 months when he walked. Bloody irritating as he wanted to be on the move but couldn't.

He's being assessed for dyspraxia now. He can't pedal, can't draw, is very unco-ordinated and floppy and a whole host of other issues.

dd crawled at 8 months and was so good at it she din't want to walk... didn't bother til 14.5 months.

ds2 didn't crawl but he scooted around on his hands and feet like Mowgli in the Jungle Book (which is apparently developmentally the same thing) from 7 months and walked when he was 10 months.

3 kids, same parents, same stimulus, same amount of tummy time, same flooring but very differant development

brimfull · 16/10/2010 00:12

ds never crawled
never bottom shuffled
went straight to cruising at about 10/11mos I think
he's 8 now and hates getting his hands dirty
maybe it was that that stopped him Wink

chandra · 16/10/2010 00:20

DS cruised before he crawled, and then crawled so well it took him a good while to walk.

Please encourage crawling, it is essential in the development of co-ordinated movement. It is incredibly important for the development of other motor skills, from running to writing.

susitwoshoes · 16/10/2010 08:31

chandra - really? I know plenty of adults who didn't crawl, and given that they're all doing pretty well thanks very much I'm a bit Hmm about that.

bruffin · 16/10/2010 08:41

DS only commando crawled at 8 months then walked at 10 months, never got up up on all 4s.

DD was more traditional, commandoed from about 8 months, became a super crawler and walked at 13 months.

chandra that isn't true. Crawling isn't even considered a development stage or necessary.

My son has never crawled. He bum shuffled, walked on hands and feet with his his bum in the air and now walks.
