My ds has developed a habit of hummimg in the last few months. Very short hums and repetitive. He knows he does it but can't stop himself and has said that othe chn tell him off for it in class. Anyone got any experience of this?

It is probably a habit that is comforting to him. Try to distract him with something else.

He may also do it because it annoys people and it gets him attention.

I used to do this. I was always making up songs in my head but sometimes would be making a sound. I wouldn't realise I was humming until the people around me said something. I don't know when the phase ended but I definitely didn't do it as a teenager, I would have been too self-conscious. I remember teachers asking me not to hum in class in the last years of primary school. It must have been so annoying but I was usually concentrating really hard on my work and completely unaware that I was in the classroom.
