Waiting till last min before asking for loo

Hi

Is this normal???

My DS is 4 and when asked if he needs loo before we go out the house, most of the time the answer is "no!"
Although he does sometimes say "yes" and go and actually does toilet.

I try to make hi at least try before we go out.

The problem I have is that when we are out anywhere he will announce he needs toilet NOW!
And it is a mad dash for the nearest toilet as NOW means NOW!!

Is this normal?? That he waits till last minute before asking???

It causes no end of problems, today for example he was asked if he need to go to toilet before leaving a childrens party he had been at....No, was the reply...less than 5 mins later....he needed to go....NOW!!!

Any help or advice welcome

Thanks

Im not sure if I can answer if its 'normal' as my DD has special needs but she does this. I asked her development Paediatrician about it last week, she said 'encourage bigger daytime drinks and regular visits to the toilet, even if they say then dont need to go, hopefully this will encourage them to have a fuller bladder and recognise the urge before its last minute. Going at the last minute can put added stress on the bladder.'

I hope this helps. :)

Hi yep its typical of kids that age - and mine still do it at 5.5years

May I suggest that you set up a 'leaving the house routine' before you leave the house he has to go to the toilet, even if he says that he does not want to go make him go. Use it in conjunction with a sticker chart.
