My DS is 6 months and loves rolling about the place and doing push-ups, arching his back and so-forth. He also seems to have very strong legs and always tries to stand up! But he's really big- almost 2 stone! and some people say this will stop him crawling so easily?? Or is that rubbish? He can't sit up by himself for very long yet either.

Oh, he'll crawl when he's ready! Try not to worry about it, six months is very young.

I wasn't too worried just wondering! It's so exciting watching him develop! It's more everyone else- who don't have ababies- saying 'when's he gonna crawl?' all the time! Also just thinking about when I need to get one of those playpen things so I can shower etc!Smile

He will crawl when he is ready to or maybe not at all! My DD rolled around til she was about 6 months then commando crawled for a while before the 'real thing'
Can't see why weight would prohibit him.
Some babies don't crawl properly at all and cruise instead.
Get a playpen though as soon as he starts to be able to get himself around by rolling etc. And childproof sooner rather than later - as I discovered make up is the equivalent of a winning lottery ticket to a 7 month old!

My DD couldn't be bothered with crawling. One day she just decided to walk! She used to bounce everywhere on her bottom a lot before hand. I'm sure she was part tiggerGrin.

Ha ha ha Grin

My dd was doing exactly this at six months and we thought she was about to crawl, but very little progress was made until 3 days ago (she's 9.5 months). She just didn't 'get' the whole crawling thing and although she could stand holding onto the sofa, stand up when we were holding her hands and shuffle around the floor (right across the room without meaning to if sitting down and exitedly kicking legs!), she simply didn't crawl. We then assumed she would go straight to cruising and so would be pretty immobile for a while longer. Anyway 3 days ago she just did it and she hasn't stopped since.

I just think they're all different and everything they learn seems to go in fits and spurts so you never can tell what's going to happen next or how long it will take to get there.

I really hope for you though that your ds isn't an early crawler, as dear God do I wish dd was still just sitting where I leave her - the ability to crawl just creates too many heart stopping moments! You'll need eyes in the back of your head Wink

DD2 is 11 months and has now mastered crawling (been trying since about 8 or 9 months). Agree with pTACOM - now that she's flying about it is a nightmare - can't leave doors open, can't leave anything lying about and have lost her in the house on more than one occasion..

He'll crawl when he's ready, and it really doesn't matter what weight he is.

mamaloco · 18/09/2010 21:57

DD2 was (is still) very big, she started crawling at 5 months. she was almost 9 kg. The weight isn't going to stop him. He will do it when he is ready.
She is now 7.5 months and cruising. Her weight didn't stop her.
Be careful what you wish for! Young babies who are mobile are a nightmare to look after Wink
