is this a tantrum?

My DS who is 20 months constantly does this and I'm not sure if its a tantrum....basically if I tell him off, he bursts out crying hysterically and so much that he doesn't breathe, then goes purple and then gets his breath and is fine....

Its really difficult because I pick him straight up as soon as he starts to not breathe so that i can blow on his face, and to protect his head as he usually arches back too.

He usually does this once every few days and I think its when hes tired and or hungry. But today he did it about 6 times and was so miserable all day....so its a vicious circle as I tell him off about something so he cries, but then he gets a cuddle as I am trying to get him to breathe. I really felt that today it was just for attention and it was sooooo tough and I am sooo glad he is finally in bed now (we live overseas)...

anyway pls give me some help on this one cos I was very nearly close to leaving him to it today!!

What I forgot to add was, so if its a tantrum I should be ignoring it but don't feel I can because of the not breathing thing ..
