Another My 2.5yr Old Picky Eater...

DS is 30 months old. He used to have a few favourite meals that he would be guaranteed to eat. Chicken, rice and peas. Spaghetti Bolognese. Chicken sandwiches. Cheese on toast. Tuna in cheese/tomato sauce. Spaghetti.

Now, he won't eat anything apart from porridge, yoghurt, bread, wraps with no filling and will nick a dry ryvita or cream cracker. He will occasionally eat chicken and will always eat steak on the odd occasion we have it but only if it isn't too chewy.

I am at my wits end. HV was saying not to make any fuss as it is likely a control thing for him and he is just experimenting with his new found ability to do what he wants.

When he was younger and just weaned he LOVED broccoli, parsnips, carrot, turnip and all kinds of veg. Not keen on fruit. He has had a few Ella's pouches now to try and get some fruit/veg into his diet but he will not touch real fruit/veg. I cooked and mashed up some pears and hid it in a yoghurt. He ate it like normal until he found a lump of pear and that was it. "I NO LIKE IT MUMMY!" with eyebrows down in a big frown.

What do I do?

Maxybrown: lol at cat-boy! Does he like being tickled under the chin?
Dancergirl: very encouraging, you are right, I know it! I just have to perfect the "grit teeth and say nothing" during mealtimes, oh and throw the AK book in the bin ( on top of tonights dinner.....)

maxybrown · 29/09/2010 18:12

actually bellagio - I would ditch the AK book in the bin FIRST, then pour tonight's dinner ON TOP of the book Grin

come to think of it - he does like having his chin tickled Grin

I keep DS's meals very simple - never ever bother with the veg now, he never eats it and looks a picture of health! I remember watching a fussy eaters program when DS was very small baby and there's me " what a load of rubbish, blah blah blah" yeah right. But anyway there was a girl on it and she had this beautiful long red hair that was soooooooo shiny! All she ate was wotsits - and was it Macdonalds fries (can't remember now) and she was 11 or something but they ran loads of tests on her and she was in tip top condition!

Speaking as a very fussy eater who was forced to eat vegetables (even though I cried and heaved through every meal), stop worrying! I am very healthy, still loathe most vegetables and many other foods but it's just the way I am.
Unless they're just eating strawberry yoghurts and fading away to nothing (in which case see your doctor and read Tanya Byron) stop worrying.
We all have different tastes in all kinds of things and that includes food.
It impinges on my social life sometimes, but I have improved as I've got older. Don't make mealtimes a battlefield, it's not worth it. Continue to offer different foods. Some will work, some won't. But fight and you'll lose. You can't make someone like something that makes them feel sick!

I think to be honest this thread has just become a shared chat rather than a worrying thread though! I'm not worried - gave up on that ages ago Grin

I was forced to eat some veg too - but I am fine I have to say and now love all veggies so guess it just depends on the person anyway!

I'm trying multivitamins now, Abidec syrup, reported to increase their appetite....watch this space!

maxybrown · 02/10/2010 14:52

That is interestin as over easter DS had been ill and really wasn't himself so I got him a multivit then and he ate like a horse! And did try new things..... Mind you - it soon stopped Hmm

Maria2007loveshersleep · 02/10/2010 18:29

I've thought of multivits too (with iron, maybe?) for DS but am unsure whether they're a good idea, keep getting conflicted reports from people... Confused.
