3.4 yo ds chewing / sucking hands the whole time

and it is driving me mad! he has never been a thumb sucker (didn't even want a dummy when a baby). Suddenly I can't get him to get his hands away from his mouth.

Does anyone know of a way to get him to stop please? Alternatively should I buy him something to chew on ?!?!? that sounds mad I know but I would rather he chewed on a teether than constantly putting his hands in his mouth.

another bump! Have tried explaining that he will give himself a sore tummy if he keeps putting his hands in his mouth the whole time (he has had the runs on and off for the last few days) but to no avail. Any ideas?!?
