DS (6) scared to eat after near choking incident

Hello all

My nearly 6 yr old DS almost choked on half a chewy sweet last week.

He started coughing and spluttering - I slapped him on the back and it came back up. I think it was on is way back up anyway.
But as you can imagine it really scared and upset him.

Ever since then he has been scared to eat. He is a worrier anyway. He takes tiny bites of food and chews it until its almost liquid and then finds it hard to swallow - mainly I think because he is thinking about it too much.

He normally loves his food - had his favourite tea tonight and he ate hardly any of it. The only thing he will eat with gusto is yoghurt.

I'm hoping that its a phase and that he will gradually get back to normal, but just wondered if anyone has had a similar experience and if there is anything I can do to help him.

Thanks

I really am going with my gut feeling but give him yogurt, and other things like mash potatoes and baked beans and things that are reasy to swollow like veggy pasta or tomato soup for as long as it takes for him to recover. It must have been very hard for him and it might still hurt. After a few days I would reintroduce more things to chew.

Thanks for the advice BlueberryPancake - its upsetting to see him like this as he's really not himself. Am off to stock up on yoghurt and soup.
