He's 4.4 and has aspergers traits (not the full syndrome just some of the problems). He's recently started trashing toys etc when he's frustrated or if he's hurt himself. i've tried moving him to a different room and asking him to come back when he feels calmer but he just trashes everything in that room. He chucks toys around, pulls books off shelves etc. He's really distressed when he's doing it so isn't trying to be naughty.
It's happening at least once a day at the moment and I'm really stumped as to what to do. i'm trying to make him clear up the mess he's made after but that can lead to another tantrum so I'm not sure if insisting on that is escalating things.
Any advice would be much appreaciated

Put him in a fairly sterile are with no toys or other breakable stuff (hallway?).

I think maybe we need to find space like that. Have taken several doors off downstairs so we don't have a room we can shut him into iyswim. Have considered bedroom and just putting up with the inevitable carnage of books all over the floor.
